The Little Haiti Farmers Market launched on Saturday, January 7, 2012, with tremendous success and community support. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Toussaint Louverture Elementary School in Miami. The Little Haiti Farmers Market is a weekly not-for-profit community event where vendors gather to sell affordable, fresh, and locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables foods, prepared foods and Haitian specialty goods directly to consumers. Managed by Bochika, the Little Haiti Farmers Market is part of the Make Healthy  Happen Miami campaign that is working to transform Miami’s food deserts and food swamps into healthy, sustainable food systems.

In collaboration with community partners, the market will host cooking demonstrations, free health screenings, wellness workshops, children’s activities and entertainment. Aimed at serving the needs of the diverse Little Haiti community, the Farmers Market offers information in English, Creole, and Spanish. The market accepts EBT, Debit, and Credit cards, and, in keeping with Bochika’s commitment to community service, purchases made with SNAP benefits (food stamps) will be doubled up to $10 per visit via the “Bochika Bonus Bucks” program (the market will accept EBT beginning in February).

Market Mission

The mission of the Little Haiti Farmers Market is to provide affordable, fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables to the neighborhood of Little Haiti and greater Miami area. The market, with support from Bochika, aims to be a leader and a model for a more sustainable food system in Miami, FL.

The Little Haiti Farmers Market envisions a Miami in which everyone, regardless of geographic or socio-economic status, can easily access affordable and quality healthy foods.

Bochika Bonus Bucks (SNAP Benefits)

Bochika Bonus Bucks is a cash-match program designed to increase access to healthy foods for all SNAP beneficiaries. For every $5 in SNAP benefits spent at the Little Haiti Farmers Market with SNAP benefits, Bochika will give an additional $5 to spend on MORE fresh food and plants up to $10 per customer per week. SNAP beneficiaries are invited to visit Bochika’s booth at the Little Haiti Farmers Market to enroll in the program (program begins in February).

SNAP benefits can be used to purchase vegetables, fruit, dairy, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, bread, cereals, jam, honey, rice, grains and dried beans, and pickles and packaged pastries. SNAP benefits are also accepted for seeds and plants which produce food.  For more information on using or accepting SNAP for seeds and plants, visit our friends at SNAP Gardens.

There are many ways to get involved with the Little Haiti Farmers Market and help Bochika serve the Little Haiti neighborhood. Whether you are a local business or restaurant trying to increase visibility, private vendor selling specialty goods, community organization or Church seeking to engage the community or an individual looking to give-back- this is an opportunity for you!

Vendor

Bochika is currently seeking new vendors for its 2012 farmers market Fall season. Small businesses and entrepreneurs offering produce, healthy prepared foods, health and beauty products are welcome to apply to become a vendor. Your tax-deductible sponsorship or donation helps Bochika continue to double the purchasing power of community members that are most in need of healthy food. Volunteer

The market is in need of volunteers, especially health care providers, nutritionists, and volunteers to lead children’s games and activities, as well as people to come early and help set up!
